Skills Courses

Over a quiet afternoon, we will guide you through specific skills in detail. Focus will be placed on one or more of the following:

- Firecraft - how to light and maintain a fire in any condition and with a range of materials.
- Shelter building - protecting yourself from the elements with what you're carrying and what you can find.
- Map Reading and Improvised Navigation - get yourself out of the situation before it needs surviving!
- Animal tracking - see what is around you. It's not as simple as it might sound.
- Water & Food Acquisition and Preparation - find and purify water, prepare local plant and animal life for food. Learn how to create improvised snares and track your quarry.

- Urban Survival Preparation - Preparing yourself and those around you to survive the initial shock of a sudden change or disaster. Including: Water/food, Clothing, Bugging In / Out, Caching, Route Preparation.

- Coastal Foraging and Survival - The coast is a goldmine for foragers and survivors. Learn how to find freshwater, how to find and prepare food and how to shelter yourself from the worst.

You will be given in-depth instruction and enough time to practice for yourself in a comfortable environment, next to a roaring open fire, under the guidance of our friendly instructor. Bring a thermos!

Introduction to Survival

Over the course of a single day, you will be given practical, hands-on demonstrations of all 4 Principles of Survival:

- Protection
- Location
- Acquisition of Water and Food
- Navigation

Under the guise of a realistic scenario, you will be shown each of the key principles in turn and given time to practice each one. By the end of the day you will have the confidence to know what kit and equipment is essential to carry and that you will be able to protect yourself and those around you for a limited time should a pleasant Sunday walk in the hills go wrong. Lunch is provided. You will be given a survival tin to use and take away with you.

Wilderness Weekend

Beginning at 9am on a Saturday and finishing at 4pm on the Sunday, the Wilderness Weekend covers all of the principles as listed above but will also include:

- Survival Psychology
- Camp Craft
- Kit selection and packing
- Emergency Preparation (including for Urban Shock / Disaster)

Over the course of the weekend, you will have the chance to put together all these skills to build your own shelter using resources you can expect to find in the natural environment.  Having built your home for the night, you will enjoy dinner in the open air, next to an open fire, with plenty of opportunity to swap stories and ask more questions of your instructor. You will be given a survival tin to use and take away with you.

Survival Weekend

Starting at 2pm on a Friday afternoon and concluding at 4pm on a Sunday, the Survival Weekend is for those who have tasted previous courses with us or other companies. The Friday afternoon will be spent with a revision of the guiding principles before the group will build 2-man shelters together. The first night will be spent in the group shelters while Saturday afternoon and Sunday are spent on your own within the woodland confines, having constructed your own shelter and camp. While meals are provided for the course, the focus of this course is very firmly on 'Survival' with foraging the focus throughout. This is, of course, dependent on the season although Dartmoor does provide a great deal throughout the whole year. You will be given a survival tin and knife to take away with you.
